Active August: Work-outs, Kayaking and Walks

WSAB got us moving this August! Along with Wednesday Weinberg Walks around campus, WSAB also hosted 2 work-out sessions at Henry Crown Sports Pavilion and Aquatic Center (SPAC) led by Alexia and Elah, students at Northwestern who also are professional personal trainers. And despite being rained out on our first attempt, a small group was able to kayak in very choppy conditions in late August.

On August 16 and August 23, Elah and Alexia put us through our paces! WSAB gave all participants a resistance band to keep in their offices and we did 4 stations (8 exercises total) in a circuit on both days. WSAB member Silvia Toleda had Happy Lemon smoothies available after our August 16 session and led us on a special “Weinberg Walk” from SPAC to Kresge.

Women posing in front of the mirror of a work out studioFor anyone who would like to recreate the exercises, all are easy to do with minimal equipment. Here are the exercises:

  • August 16: Intro to Strength Building
    • Banded lat pulldown/chest fly combo + balance boards/bosu ball
    • Banded bicep curls + weighted deadbugs
    • Banded rows (seated on riser bench) + high plank shoulder taps
    • Mini band glute bridges/abductions + burpees/squat thrusts
  • August 23: Exercising in your office to combat Upper Cross Syndrome
    • Mini band seated hip abductors + step-ups
    • Banded squat to overhead press + incline push-ups
    • Tricep dips + crab walk
    • Elevated single leg glute bridge march + squat jumps

The WSAB Sailing Center outing didn’t go as smoothly! Our original date of August 14 was canceled due to rain and we didn’t get the go ahead for our back-up date of August 21 until the 11th hour – even then it was too dangerous for paddleboards, so a small group of brave water-enthusiasts went out to paddle against the waves.
