Each year, the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate brings people from all over the country to run along Sheridan Road through Northwestern’s campus in unity against racial hatred and violence. All fundraising efforts for this race go towards The YWCA Evanston/Northshore who is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. The race honors the legacy of Ricky Byrdsong, former NU Basketball Coach.
This year marked the 25th anniversary and on June 16, 2024 (Father’s Day) Lisa Jene Collins (Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences) and Murielle Harris (Department of Black Studies) started the WCAS-SAB PracticeWalk Team! They did not dissappoint – Lisa and Murielle completed the 5K walk, and Cecile Sison (Media and Design Studio) ran the 5K. Where they really shone was through their fundraising – many WCAS staff past and present supported their efforts and the team wore tags bearing the names of the donors while they ran. When it was all said and done, The WCAS-SAB PracticeWalk Team came in 5th overall in fundraising, blowing by their $350.00 goal to almost $1160.00!
Thank you to all of the supporters, and our other colleagues in WCAS who also participated on other teams. We will see you next year!
